Crafted … Read more Distinctive and highly sculptural, this antique Spanish writing desk combines a graceful serpentine form with bold hand-carved walnut construction. Crafted in Spain circa 1860, the desk features a molded writing surface with a dramatic shaped front and two raised side compartments, each fitted with a small drawer and decorative iron star-form pull.

Below, two additional drawers are incorporated into the deeply shaped apron, providing useful storage while preserving the desk’s flowing architectural profile. The case is raised on robust scrolled trestle supports connected by a broad shaped stretcher, creating a strong and balanced silhouette characteristic of traditional Spanish furniture.

The richly figured walnut has developed a warm, mellow patina that enhances the depth of the carving and emphasizes the craftsmanship throughout. The serpentine lines, substantial trestle base, and unusual four-drawer configuration give the piece considerably more character than a conventional writing table or desk.
