One of the Buddhist themes that appear on Japanese ceramics is the 18 Rokans or Lohans in Chinese. Rokans are religious saints that have achieved enlightenment but elect to remain on earth to guide sentient beings towards buddhahood. Rokans came from India and some of them appear as bearded and long haired. Each Rokan has his attribute. One is associated with a lion , another with a dragon and so on.
This oval platter is blue and white porcelain. The drawer is very crisp. It is like a vignette painted on porcelain. A continuous pattern of bamboo leaves and plum blossoms decorate the platter's rim. The porcelain is very clean. The kiln is most possibly Arita. There is no maker's mark.
