It is carved from solid wood with no fragile gesso or plaster. Consequently, it has stood up to the stresses, wear, and tear of nearly 200 years. We believe that the frame probably dates from the mid-1800s and is likely to have originated from France. We base those judgments on the design elements and the oxidation of the wood. (The raw wood can be seen on the back; it is extremely dark from years and years of oxidation.) The ornamentation includes baroque swirls morphing into acanthus leaves and, in the center, two lily-of-the-valley blooms. And why have we not replaced the missing mirror? Adding such a large, heavy mirror would also add significant costs in shipping -- an amount that would far exceed the cost for a buyer to have a mirror cut at the destination. Moreover, shippers are notoriously thorough about finding a way to break anything that we ship, but particularly glass and mirrors; furthermore, they consistently refuse to pay the insurance. The frame measures 41 inches tall at the top of the crest and 21 inches wide. It is 2 inches deep. It holds a mirror 29 3/4 inches tall and 18 inches wide. The rabbet is 7/8 in. deep. See less
