A European Art Nouveau bowl of oval form with a reflective, silvery surface of highly-polished pewter from Osiris of Germany, … Read more A European Art Nouveau bowl of oval form with a reflective, silvery surface of highly-polished pewter from Osiris of Germany, dating 1906-1910. The antique bowl has flaring edges, pierced handles and is decorated with stylized blossoms and leaves with whiplash stems characteristic of Jugendstil design; Jugendstil was the the Continental iteration of Art Nouveau design. The bowl is in very good condition with a few scuffs and fine scratches, measuring 11.75 in. L x 7.88 in. W x 2.5 in. H., a perfectly sized bread basket or fruit bowl. Fully marked on the base: OSIRIS / ISIS.

Metallwarenfabrik fur Kleinkunst Walter Scherf & Co. was founded 1899 and operated in Nuremberg until 1914. The company used the trade name "Osiris" for their Art Nouveau pewter designs until 1906 when they changed the name changed to "Isis”. The firm's inventive and highly decorative objects were an international success, achieving recognition and awards at exhibitions in Turin in 1902, St. Petersburg in 1903, St. Louis in 1904, and Cape Town in 1905. Walter Scherf, formerly of Orivit in Cologne, was responsible for much of the company's oeuvre but he commissioned contributions from leading designers of the era including Friedrich Adler, Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Maria Olbrich, and Peter Behrens.
