This circa 1850 French mantel clock showcases a stunning figurative design made from cast gilt bronze. It depicts a hunter with a rabbit slung over the top curve of the clock case. The man is styled in traditional early 19th-century French fashion, featuring a high-collared double-breasted frock, a structured hat, long cotton breeches that cover his boots, and a riding crop in hand.
On the opposite side of the clock stands a small oak tree alongside a long-haired spaniel. The scene is further enhanced by a bottle of wine and a glass resting atop, hinting at a celebratory victory. Hunting motifs are prominent throughout the design, notably a French horn with a wild boar head at the center and a frieze depicting a group of dogs hunting a fox at the base. The clock stands on four bracket feet, with the base showcasing rocaille ornaments and a twisted rope motif along the border. The clock face is framed by a floral running motif, featuring black enamel Roman numerals and two black clock hands.
Made in the Napoleon III style, also known as the Second Empire style, this clock emphasizes ornamentation and high levels of detail. Characterized by a profusion of decorative motifs and naturalistic human figures, this style beautifully blends modern innovation with historicism.
The clock operates on an eight-day movement, featuring silk suspension and striking the hours and halves on a bell—typical of the era's quality timepieces. The bottom of the clock is stamped with the retailer's name, "Rey," alongside the word "Breveté," meaning 'patented' in French.
This stunningly ornate piece not only reflects the craftsmanship of its time but also serves as an impressive conversation starter for collectors. It makes a perfect gift for any antique lover or hunting enthusiast and fits elegantly on a mantel, desk, or sideboard.
