Whiting Manufacturing Co, born in 1840 as Tifft & Whiting, evolved and moved to New York after a fire in 1875. Gorham acquired it in 1924, known for superb handmade silverware. Charles Osborne, a notable designer, left his mark on the American aesthetic movement. The firm used date symbols from 1905 to 1924 before merging with Gorham in 1926.
