Rare Chinese Famille Verte Bok Choy Cabbage Pattern Serving Tureen of Early 20th century. Emerald green bok choy with multicolored butterfly insect adornments. Finished off with a Famille Rose border. This pattern is of timeless appeal with a rich, long history.
The butterfly and bok choy pattern, also referred to as the "Chinese Cabbage and Butterfly" or "Famille Verte Bok Choy" design, is a well-known motif in Chinese export porcelain from the 18th and 19th centuries. It showcases stylized images of bok choy leaves, often accompanied by butterflies and occasionally other insects or flowers, arranged around a central medallion. This pattern is linked to Chinoiserie, an artistic style inspired by Chinese and East Asian traditions.
The depiction of Chinese cabbage (bai cai) symbolizes fetrility and chastity especially in the context of marriage. The white of the cabbage is associated with purity and chastity. Bok Choy is sometime associated with unexpected fortune as well.
The cabbage and insect imagery in China can be traced back to the Yuan to early Ming Dynasty 13th - 15th century.
