Vintage Home is pleased to offer this near-complete set of 12 place settings of the iconic Desert Rose China pattern from Franciscan. The set is from our personal collection and was curated over 20 years. The pattern was released in 1941 in California and was an instant hit but made even more popular when Jackie Kennedy ordered a complete set to use as the everyday china in the White House. The pattern was produced between 1941 and 1984 but is highly sought after still today as it is one of the largest selling casual dinnerware patterns ever produced in USA history. And once Mrs. Kennedy requested it for the White House, its popularity grew beyond the United States to include pieces manufactured in England/Portugal and China. But the California pieces are the most highly sought after versions for several reasons. First is because Jackie Kennedy’s set was from the California. Additionally, the USA pieces are more intricate and detailed. This includes a higher raised rose, leaves and stems on each piece. The higher raised versions also offer a more intricate flower. The stateside pieces also offer a more detailed scalloped rim. Pieces from England and Portugal have lower raised botanical details and a lesser scalloped edge. Finally the China versions are painted on flat surfaces with no scalloped edging. PLEASE NOTE: The 115 piece set does not include the 7 rose butter pats shown in the photos.
This set is almost entirely from California. There are only a few England/Portugal pieces in the collection and none from China. The pieces have various maker marks as we added to our set over two decades when we found items we wanted at estate sales. We have photographed several marks from four cereal/oatmeal bowls. One of those is from England and shows the lesser scalloped edge from the back. Both the edging and raised botanicals do not show as prominently from the front side of each piece, but can be clearly seen from the back as photographed. There are also a couple England/Portugal pieces in the Tumblers and Lowball China glass wear. To finish out the 12 place settings of each piece, you will need 4 Dinner Plates, which are easy to find, 2 lowball glasses and 2 cereal/oatmeal bowls, which are available, but usually from England/Portugal. PLEASE NOTE: The 115 piece set does NOT include the 7 rose butter pats shown in the photos. Additionally, we have many serving pieces offered in our shop you will want to browse. The 115 piece collection being offered in this listing has the following pieces:

All are on a cream ground of which some pieces are 70 years old and may have minor discoloration spots. Several luncheon plates have the most wear as they have been used the most, including light surface scratches. We did not find any chips or cracks but may have missed a minor flea tick on an edge. The Salt and Pepper was curated with the original cork stoppers pushed inside. We were never able to extract those. We replaced with new stoppers. When empty as they will arrive, you hear those corks. But when filled with salt and pepper, you do not. Some crazing as would be expected. less
