Beautiful set of antique Limoges porcelain ramekins with separate underplates. Use as shown or divide the sets to have bowls and plates with which to serve. Perfect for sorbet, bouillon, fruit, chocolate mousse, cakes, cookies, and many other delectable treats.
From the historical information below, we believe these pieces date to between 1882 and 1915. The collection is in excellent antique condition, so much so, that they probably were displayed and seldom used. The colors are vibrant, the gilt is perfect, no cracks, no crazing, no chips. A small fabrication flaw on the bottom of 1 ramekin, invisible when in use. This was perhaps a tiny bubble in the clay which popped during firing resulting in minor material loss.
The set was created by the porcelain house, Tressemanes & Vogt of Limoges, France. The company was organized in 1882 to supply fine white porcelain wares to the American market.
Multiple backstamps can be seen on the pieces, including that of Higgins & Seiter, NY, one of the most prominent retailer of fine china and crystal in Manhattan. Founded by Colonel Charles Seiter and the Higgins Brothers, Barton & Arthur, shortly after the end of the Civil War, the partnership was officially formalized in 1887 with the opening of their opulent shop on 22nd just off 6th Avenue, a stretch known as the "Ladies Mile" so named for the elegant shops marketing fine goods to the wealthy women of the city. From the late 19thC into the first decade of the 20thC, the store expanded and flourished, offering European fine china and other high-end goods produced exclusively for their shop This lovely ramekin set is a shining example of such a transatlantic fabrication/retailing partnership.. However, as with many retail establishments, tastes and development moved in other directions. In February 1915, the store filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations.
