Popular in England and the U.S. 1870-1890, Eastlake furniture is known for its clean, modern lines and emphasis on craftsmanship vs. manufacturing. The British architect Charles Eastlake rejected the Victorian style that prevailed during this time, which he saw as stuffy, overly ornate, and way too reliant on manufacturing. He set about creating a line of "simple, sturdy furniture," which he designed to be created by cabinet and furniture makers.
