Pair of 19th C American Windsor bentwood hoop back chairs with spindle turning and with solid dished seats, on ring turned legs joined by H-shaped stretchers. Made with mixed woods, the bentwood hoop is ash, and the seat appears to be elm with the legs and spindles being beech.
Found in Massachusetts, these Windsor chairs were inspired in design by late 18th and early 19th examples that evolved in the Thames Valley region in England.

And then there is the evil vacuum cleaner dinging the legs. But rest assured, these are very well made and very sturdy chairs. Though we are classifying these as American, it is possible that these chairs are English in origin. And it is possible that an English craftsman living in New England made them. One chair is a little higher by about 1/2". Measurements might be off by an inch in any direction, so please take that into account if height, length, or width is critical. less
