The undulating edge of this meat platter is curved down and the center of the platter is raised to hold a roast and is surrounded by canals to catch juices. This Tyrolian style serving piece is made of high quality pewter as indicated by the 95% Zinn mark on the back (made of 95% tin). The 'touch mark' also contains a swan, the symbol of royalty, indicating that this piece could have been produced by a metal fabricator who had a contract with the house of the Austrian emperor, although this piece was not necessarily made for imperial use. Hunting has been a past time in European cultures for centuries and serving pieces for wild game and to celebrate the hunt were popular from imperial times to the early 20th century. This beautiful, turn of the century platter measures 16 1/4" wide , 10 1/8" deep and 1 1/8" high to the top of the side lip. A lovely platter to hang or for serving especially appropriate for a dog or hunt lover. See less
