Of Scottish heritage? The thistle is much beloved by Scots and is that country's national flower Or perhaps you just admire the symbolic attributes assigned to this plant - those of strength, determination, and resilience? No extra reasons are needed to love this wonderfully unique and beautiful purple flowered china collection.
The pattern features sprays of thistle blossoms, ranging is pale lavender to medium purple to deep merlot, on a creamy white field. Not all pieces exhibit maker's marks, but it is certain that they all are of the same manufacture and pattern. Marks en verso: Glamour by the American Limoges China Co. Made in U.S.A. Thistle 3 G NL 11".
Fabricated by the American Limoges China Co., originally founded in 1887 at East Liverpool, OH as "Sterling China", the company produced dinnerware in the fine porcelain tradition of France. Renamed as the Limoges China Co. then relocated to Sebring, OH. in 1900, the company was instrumental in advancing the production of American fine china, incorporating European techniques combined with American materials and technologies. In the 1940s, the firm was forced to include the adjective "American" in the name under threat of legal trademark action by the French porcelain producers of the Limoges, France region. The company ceased operations in the mid 1950s. This company history, paired with the more modern, midcentury aesthetic of clean lines and curves, suggests that this set is approximately 75 years old, being fabricated in the 1940s or early 1950s.
The collection consists of 35 pieces:
