Lovely collection of antique Haviland Limoges china in the "Arcadia" (Schleiger 923) pattern. Fabricated by the esteemed French porcelain house, Haviland & Co. founded in 1842 in Limoges, France.
The pieces are on a white ground with a creamy white rim. The rim has a delicate gilt inside edge, and an intricate and colorful floral, flourish, and urn pattern in shade of pink, rose, green, and gold towards the outer edge of the rim. The edge is delineated by a thin, stylized garland design in green & gold. Lovely decoration, expertly executed, creating elegant and versatile china.
The assortment consists of 39 pieces:
* 12 dinner plates (9.75" Dia., excellent condition);
* 12 salad/dessert plates (7.5" Dia., excellent condition);
* 11 bread & butter plates (6.2" Dia., excellent condition, 1 edge chip as shown);
* 1 two-handled round tureen w/ lid (10"W x 8"D x 2.5"H (w/o lid), 4"H (w/ lid), excellent condition);
* 1 two-handled sugar bowl w/ lid (7"W x 5.75"D x 2"H (w/o lid), 3"H (w/ lid), excellent condition);
* 1 creamer (5.5"W x 4.5"D x 3"H, excellent condition)
* 1 two-handled gravy boat with integral underplate (6.8" Dia. x 3"H, very good condition, 2 underplate edge chips as shown).
Back stamps en verso of "Haviland France" (underglaze green), the pattern name "Arcadia", and "Haviland & Co, Limoges". The inclusion of the phrase "decorated by" (instead of the French term "décoré par") tell us that this set was intended for the English speaking market. The identification of the country of origin (France) indicates that the set was made after the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890 which required this information for any goods exported to the U.S. yet before the subsequent 1920 amendment to this law further specifying the term "Made in France" (i.e., the country of origin) to be used on any good imported in 1921 or later. As this pattern was introduced in 1921, and contains the first marking but not the second, would suggest that this set was fabricated in 1920 before the law took effect and before the required notations were implemented in the production at this porcelain house. Thus this early set is a bit of a rarity and appears to be over 100 years old.
