Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
This beauty’s refined rustic look-and-feel was handcrafted, architecturally not decoratively, to mimic the lines of a Hitchcock armchair. The original Hitchcock chair design and style can be traced to Connecticut woodworker Lambert Hitchcock who had achieved early success producing unfinished chair components sold by local merchants as replacement parts for broken chairs but who in 1820, acquired a wooden two-story building and began his dream of making his own style of chair. The chair he made was based loosely on the Sheraton style of the period but it also included elements from Empire klismos chairs with a few pointers from the popular “Baltimore” chairs. The architectural elements of a Hitchcock chair include a rush seat that is enclosed on all four sides by trim; ring turned bobbins on both sides of the crest rail with a flat center; a large central cross rail with a thinner slat below; rear legs rising to form the chair stiles; ring turned front legs ending in ball feet and ring turned cross stretchers on front and back; smooth sides. The only element missing here is the traditional Hitchcock-type stencil motifs. This beauty measures as follows:
Overall: 34” x 19” x 16” H/W/D
Seat: 16¼” x 15” W/D; seat-to-floor height 17½”
Arm length: 13”; arm height 9"
Back: 17½” x 16” H/W
Weight: approximately 10 lbs.
Handcrafted from solid mahogany wood; hand-tied fiber rush seat in a naturally aged honeyed tan hue; deep rich mahogany stain finish. In excellent condition with minimal age-appropriate wear. Taut handwoven seat in pristine condition. There is no makers mark to be found. This beauty will add character and style in any interior, from modern to traditional and can easily be placed into service in any room, from guest bedroom, child’s room or in a nicely-sized entryway.
