This Japanese brocade obi is an elaborately woven sash worn with the traditional obi. It is known for its luxurious texture and intricate patterns. The material in this obi is silk brocade, and the prominent design is a series of fans among floral motives such as plum blossoms and chrysanthemum. These designs in grey, orange, tan and red in repeat patterns stand out in the light beige background. There is an abundance of gold threads that still shimmer in the light. Since the obi is worn around the body and then folded, it is important to have a repeat pattern so as not to break the continuality of the design.
This is a Maru Obi, the most formal, worn only in festive and important occasions such as a wedding. It is fully patterned on both sides. Used mostly as a table runner today, it can also be a wall hanging.
