A striking mid-century Italian polished brass Chiavari side chair, circa 1960, distinguished by its dramatic bat-wing crest, exceptionally tall spindle back and newly upholstered red velvet seat. With its slender proportions, sculptural silhouette and warm metallic finish, this elegant chair embodies the theatrical glamour associated with Italian Hollywood Regency furniture.
The chair follows the celebrated Chiavari tradition developed in the Ligurian town of Chiavari, Italy. Cabinetmaker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi created the original lightweight Chiavari chair form in the early 19th century. This example is a later, circa-1960 interpretation of that historic Italian design and should be described as being in the Descalzi or Chiavari tradition, rather than as a chair personally manufactured by Descalzi.
Unlike traditional wooden Chiavari chairs, this decorative mid-century example is constructed in polished brass. Its tall, narrow back is formed from finely turned vertical spindles framed by more substantial side posts. The crest terminates in an unusual sculptural profile resembling outstretched bat wings, giving the chair a distinctive identity and differentiating it from more conventional Chiavari seating.
A shaped lower back rail echoes the movement of the upper crest, while the delicate legs and rectangular stretcher system preserve the light architectural appearance for which Chiavari chairs are known. The front legs feature turned decorative elements, and the gently splayed rear legs contribute to the chair’s graceful profile. The polished brass surface reflects light beautifully without appearing overly new, retaining areas of subtle vintage patina and normal tonal variation.
The seat has been professionally reupholstered in rich red velvet. The saturated crimson color creates a luxurious contrast with the golden brass frame and strengthens the chair’s Hollywood Regency character. Its compact scale makes it especially versatile as a vanity chair, boudoir chair, dressing-room seat, occasional side chair or decorative desk chair. It could also be positioned in a bedroom, bathroom, entryway or walk-in wardrobe.
Measuring only 15 inches wide and 15 inches deep, the chair can provide an elegant seating accent without occupying substantial floor space. Its tall 37-inch back gives it greater decorative presence than its compact footprint might suggest. The seat height is approximately 16 inches, making it somewhat lower than many contemporary dining chairs and particularly suitable for occasional, vanity or decorative use.
This vintage Italian brass Chiavari chair would complement Hollywood Regency, Italian modern, Art Deco Revival, neoclassical, maximalist and eclectic interiors. It could also introduce a refined metallic accent into a more restrained contemporary setting. The combination of polished brass, red velvet and a sculptural bat-wing crest gives the chair strong photographic presence and makes it an appealing choice for designers seeking distinctive vintage seating.
The chair has been refinished and reupholstered and remains in good vintage condition. The brass displays light patina, small surface marks and normal signs of aging consistent with use. One small dent is present on the front right leg and should be documented in the listing photographs. It is minor and not visually prominent during normal display. Please examine all photographs for a complete understanding of the chair’s condition.
