More jewel-like than conventional occasional seating, this vintage Italian Chiavari chair combines a tall, finely articulated brass frame with a deeply colored crimson-red velvet seat. Dating to circa 1960, the chair has a dramatic sculptural presence despite its remarkably compact 15-inch-wide footprint, making it an especially effective accent for a dressing room, writing area, bedroom or luxurious bathroom.
The polished brass frame is constructed with the delicacy and visual lightness associated with Chiavari furniture. Slender outer posts rise from gently splayed legs to frame a tall open back composed of individually turned vertical spindles. These narrow elements create a rhythmic architectural pattern while allowing the surrounding wall, mirror or upholstery to remain visible through the chair.
Its most distinctive feature is the unusual upper crest. The shaped brass silhouette suggests stylized bat wings, flames or a theatrical crown, giving this particular chair a more expressive identity than standard Chiavari seating. A subtly undulating lower back rail echoes the movement of the crest, creating visual continuity between the chair’s upper and lower sections.
The seat has been reupholstered in plush crimson velvet, selected to complement the warm golden tones of the polished brass. The red upholstery gives the chair a glamorous Italian Hollywood Regency character without concealing its light construction. Its shallow, compact seat and 19-inch seat height make it particularly suitable for a vanity, dressing table or writing desk.
Chiavari chairs originated in the Ligurian town of Chiavari, where Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi developed the original lightweight chair form during the early 19th century. This example was produced much later, circa 1960, and represents a decorative mid-century interpretation of that historic Italian tradition. It should therefore be described as a Chiavari chair in the Descalzi tradition, rather than as a piece personally made by Descalzi.
Standing 39 inches high, this example has a noticeably elongated back that gives it greater decorative presence than its narrow proportions might suggest. At only 15 inches wide and 15 inches deep, it can fit comfortably into spaces where a conventional side chair would feel too large. It could be positioned at a petite writing desk, in front of a dressing table, beside a console or as an independent sculptural accent.
The polished brass and crimson velvet palette works beautifully in Hollywood Regency, Italian modern, Art Deco Revival, neoclassical and maximalist interiors. It could also provide a refined flash of color and metal within a restrained contemporary room. Displayed against plaster, lacquer, marble, travertine or richly patterned wallpaper, the chair has enough visual personality to function almost like a decorative object.
The chair has been reupholstered and remains in good vintage condition. The polished brass retains normal signs of age, including light patina, subtle tonal variation and small surface marks consistent with use.
A distinctive vintage Italian brass vanity chair for collectors and designers seeking compact seating with strong sculptural character, historic Chiavari influence and an unmistakable Hollywood Regency color combination.
