This beautiful 19th-century English papier-mâché parlor maid tray features raised edges, luminous crushed-shell mother-of-pearl inlaid in a graceful wisteria design, and richly gilded Rococo decoration on a deep black ground. Inspired by elegant 18th-century French forms, its gently concave shape and lightweight construction were designed to rest comfortably against a maid's waist while serving tea in the drawing room, combining refinement with practical function. A comparable English example dating to circa 1860–1870 is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection.
Originally produced in graduated sets of three or more, these trays are now highly sought after as decorative objects. This example is equally striking displayed upright on an easel atop a console, mantel, or bookcase, or mounted on the wall as a distinctive alternative to traditional artwork. The shimmering mother-of-pearl inlay and gilded decoration catch the light beautifully, making it an elegant addition to English Country, Traditional, Grandmillennial, Hollywood Regency, Victorian, Maximalist, Eclectic, Dark Academia, and Transitional interiors, while adding warmth and character to contemporary spaces.
Collectors of English antiques, admirers of historic decorative arts, interior designers, and anyone looking for a unique statement piece will appreciate its craftsmanship, history, and versatility.
We currently have two trays available, with the larger companion tray offered in a separate listing. This listing is for the smaller tray. The final photograph shows both trays together to illustrate their relative scale and proportion.
