Inspired by elegant 18th-century French forms, its gently concave shape and lightweight construction were designed to rest comfortably against a maid's waist while serving tea in the drawing room, combining refinement with practical function. A comparable English example dating to circa 1860–1870 is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection.

Originally produced in graduated sets of three or more, these trays are now highly sought after as decorative objects. This example is equally striking displayed upright on an easel atop a console, mantel, or bookcase, or mounted on the wall as a distinctive alternative to traditional artwork.
