The glassmaker started in Fostoria, OH before moving to West Virginia due to the availability of natural gas which was advantageous to glass making. Fostoria produced American Clear from 1915-1982 using their handmade high-quality Crystal formula that featured fire polishing. The Crystal pattern is a thicker glass making it perfect for both causal and formal dining. The pattern features a cube motif design that has an Art Deco feel and which had not been seen in glassware at the time it was introduced. Fostoria was a major contributor in creating the Bridal Registry industry. There was a time in American when Fostoria’s American Clear was the most popular Crystal glassware pattern because of Bridal sales. Cheaper foreign machine produced glassware started flooding the market in the 1950s and took its toll on many American glass companies including Fostoria which closed in 1986. Today the American Clear pattern is still highly sought after in the vintage marketplace.
