Welcome to Turtle and Crane — Turning the Past into Stunning Decor for Today.
This Vintage Original masterwork is a quintessential example of the "Scholar’s Garden" aesthetic, perfectly bridging the gap between ancient spiritual symbolism and the high-gloss glamour of Mid-Century Hollywood Regency design. Crafted in a dramatic twelve-sided Lotus Form, this heavy brass tray features a meticulously hand-etched copper medallion at its heart.
The central motif depicts a rare Scholar’s Stone (Gongshi)—a traditional symbol of wisdom, resilience, and the wildness of nature—nestled among lush, blooming peonies representing honor and prosperity. Unlike common vintage brassware, this piece features a sophisticated bi-metal construction. The warm, hand-hammered copper ground offers a stunning textural contrast against the substantial, polished brass rim, creating a "jewelry for the home" effect that catches the light from every angle.
Styled after the iconic "Global Maximalism" of Tony Duquette and the "Asian-Modern" fusion of James Mont, this 10-inch tray is the ultimate Luxury Catchall. It is a foundational piece for a Grandmillennial vanity, a sophisticated "landing pad" for keys on a Dorothy Draper style console, or a shimmering base for a crystal decanter in a curated bar setup.
A true "designer's secret," this ritual tray embodies the curated, world-traveler vibe found in the most exclusive Palm Beach Regency interiors.

The mixed-metal interplay between the polished brass rim and the hand-etched copper medallion is vibrant and clear. • Surface: There are very minor, age-appropriate surface scuffs and faint "flea-bite" oxidation spots, which are characteristic of authentic early 20th-century brass and copper. These only serve to enhance its provenance and "found object" character. • Structure: The tray is heavy, sits perfectly flat, and the twelve-sided lotus-form rim remains structurally sound with no bends or dents. • Artistry: The hand-etched Scholar’s Stone and floral motifs are crisp and deeply defined. The hand-hammered dimpled ground (stippling) remains uniform and provides a stunning textural shimmer when caught by the light. This tray has been lightly cleaned but not over-polished, preserving the rich, dark oxidation in the recessed engravings that provides the necessary contrast for the Chinoiserie artwork to pop. less
