The top comes off for possible storage, while there is not base - perhaps for garden shoes or small tools, in the house to hide games or dog toys?
We have a very similar pair - the same style and Size with sightly different color variations on the painting. if bought as pair one has some condition issues, but nothing that bothers us. see the images.
