Chinese basket weavers are so good at making baskets. As a collector or baskets for half a century, I can say this type of tiered baskets with a handle keeping the tiers in place is uniquely Chinese, and likely Southern Chinese. Baskets are very practical containers. I am not sure why they are called Wedding Baskets. My guess this term could be a nomenclature by Western designers. The closest association with weddings is the basket as a holder of wedding cakes. Pastries associated with weddings are filled with symbolism. The pastries are more like cookies or rolls than a Western wedding cake. Walnut cookies symbol a long happy marriage. Red bean cakes with double egg yokes represent fertility, and so on.
The basket weave is tight and wood pieces are involved to stablize the form of the tiers. The handle has carving on both sides and they are well done. There is a design on the two color woven cover but it is hard to decipher.
