What is an accent chair?

An accent chair is any chair that is used for leisurely sitting in a room. Generally, a dining chair is not considered an accent chair as its purpose is to seat guests for dining, not purely leisure. Typically, accent chairs are less upright than dining chairs. Accent chairs often have a slightly reclined back, allowing occupants to maintain comfort for a longer period of time than a dining chair. Of course, like most things, this is not a hard rule. Some accent chairs such as wingback chairs and bergeres have very straight backs. However, unlike dining chairs, these chairs are usually densely padded, upholstered, and provide head support. Accent chairs can be used in any room, but most commonly they are found opposite a sofa in a living room, or a bed in a bedroom. They are also frequently used in pairs. Some common styles of accent chairs include: rocking chairs, wingback chairs, bergeres, safari chairs, club chairs, tub chairs, slipper chairs, and lounge chairs.
