A lovely set of six (6) Majolica fruit-themed plates made by iconic Portuguese ceramics maker Bordallo Pinheiro. Each plate is embossed, hand-painted and glazed in rosy 'Ingrid' pink and features the depiction of a different fruit surrounded by foliage in raised relief. The set's 6-fruit theme includes cherries, grapes, strawberries and pears and two other fruits.
The plate diameters are 7.75 inches, well-sized for salad and also appetizers, side dishes, luncheon service or desserts.
Complementing an array of decorating styles and settings, these make a great display on their own, and also mix and match well with other tableware, contributing to a fun and colorful table-scape. They make a ovely addition to a holiday or special occasion table any time of the year. (And for majolica 'fans', these are especially fetching used together with green Majolica!)
Stamped on the plate undersides are both the maker's mark and 'Made in Portugal'. This charming pattern originated in the 1970's; this set dates from the late 1970's to early 1980's.
NOTE ON PHOTOS: There are dark shadows as well as reflections evident in photos of some individual plates which are NOT present in the plates themselves.
Maker's history: The Bordallo Pineheiro firm was established in Portugal in 1884 by master artisan Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro who became one of the most influential people in nineteenth century Portuguese culture. With his humor, creativity, technical skill and social consciousness injected into every artistic piece of hand-painted and nature-inspired earthenware he made, the company gained recognition the world over for its selection of unique high-quality table pieces and ornaments and is still in operation today.

In any case they are in excellent condition with no known scratches, dings, scuffs, cracks and no repairs. The subtle but somewhat noticeable variations in color among the plates and even within the same plate are not unusual for hand crafted items. less
