The sculpture is crafted out of wood and painted in a vibrant green color. The carving is adorned with textured details, which are highlighted by silver. The fish sculpture has a commanding presence and can be displayed with or without a mounting.

The Bozo people of Mali are known for their exceptional fishing and boating skills, and their annual catch is a vital export for the country. The Bozo name is derived from the Bambara word for straw house, referencing the temporary fishing camps where they reside.

Apart from their fishing skills, the Bozo are also renowned for their colorful puppets. These sculptures feature moving parts and are used during harvest and fishing celebrations. The fish sculptures can produce a clicking sound as their fins move, which classifies them as puppets. These fish sculptures have some age but were carved for decorative purposes.

After long hours of harvesting the fields, the villagers come together to celebrate. Puppets are brought out, and competitions are held to find the best performers.
