The elegant bowl has a deep half-hemisphere form that is supported by a short and small foot ring. The wall was rather thinly potted, a little unusual for the artist. The exterior and interior of the bowl are covered in a black glaze with a subtle metallic sheen. As if painting on a black canvas, the artist created a striking pattern of splashed and swirling blueish white glaze, likely using a salt or alkaline based glaze. The bowl is signed on the unglazed bottom "Beato" as shown.
Beatrice Wood was a multi-disciplinary artist and author. In her long life and career, she was known as Mama of Dada, an avant-garde artist, a potter, an author, and an inspiration. Her long career with pottery is distinguished by a signature style of in-glaze luster that draws the metallic salts to the surface of the glaze by starving the kiln of oxygen. See less
