This Sommeso a Bollicine vase by Carlo Scarpa is a stunning example of the innovative techniques and designs that emerged from the collaboration between Scarpa and Paolo Venini at Venini & Co. Murano in the mid-1930s.
This ovoid egg-shaped vase measures H. 4.75” x W 3.25” and is made of cased glass in a rich, bright green color. It's surface is peppered with numerous small air bubbles, giving it it's name, Bollicine. These bubbles were created using a technique that involved injecting the glass with potassium nitrate, a salt compound that, when heated, frees carbon dioxide. The resulting effect is mesmerizing, with the bubbles seemingly mimicking the rounded shape of the vase, as well as, a reflection the colors of the lagoon and waters of Venice surrounding the island.
This piece is marked on the bottom with the acid stamp “venini murano made in italy” and is cataloged as No. 3596 in the exhibition catalog Carlo Scarpa, Le Stanze del Vetro, Venice 2012. The Venini glass works was founded in 1921 and became known for its experimentation with techniques, silhouettes, and colors. Scarpa's work was crucial to this experimentation, as he worked closely with master glassblowers to push the boundaries of glass-making.
