Dating to the mid-19th century, this handsome English mahogany tea caddy chest features two hinged tea compartments flanking a removable glass mixing bowl. Elegant in its simplicity, the box showcases richly figured mahogany veneers accented by fine boxwood inlay and a classic diamond-shaped escutcheon on the front.
The interior opens to reveal a wonderfully vibrant red paper-lined lid, creating a beautiful contrast against the warm wood tones. The original fitted interior includes two lidded compartments traditionally used for storing different varieties of tea, while the removable glass bowl at center would have been used for blending or measuring loose leaves.
I especially love the combination of the warm mahogany exterior and the striking red interior. Displayed open, the piece becomes just as decorative as it is functional. The clean lines and understated craftsmanship allow it to work equally well in traditional, English, library, or collected interiors.
A charming and increasingly hard-to-find antique tea caddy that offers both historical character and timeless decorative appeal.

The mahogany exterior retains a warm patina with expected surface wear from over a century of use. There are a few areas of veneer and edge loss, including small missing wood sections along the case edges, as shown in the photos. The interior retains its original red paper lining, which displays age-related wear and small losses. The removable glass mixing bowl is present and displays beautifully. The original lock remains in place, though the key is no longer present. Overall, the piece remains structurally sound and presents exceptionally well. less
