Bold, playful and wonderfully sculptural, this dramatic pair of abstract modernist candlestick holders by Rick Martin was created in 2012 and transforms a functional object into a striking piece of contemporary decorative art.

Constructed in black-finished metal, each tall candlestick features an energetic composition of sweeping arcs, elongated vertical lines and oversized circular forms, creating an architectural silhouette that changes depending on the viewing angle.

The restrained black framework provides a dramatic backdrop for the six brilliant metallic-finish spheres positioned across the centers. Shades of turquoise, aqua, gold, orange-red, magenta and deep violet give the pair a fabulous burst of color and a distinctly Memphis, Pop Art and postmodern-inspired personality.

Although designed to hold taper candles, these pieces are visually strong enough to be displayed completely on their own. At just over 19 inches tall, they have substantial presence and read almost like a pair of miniature abstract sculptures.

Placed together, the two pieces form a beautifully balanced composition, with the curved lines appearing to mirror and interact with one another. They would be fantastic on a console, dining table, mantel, credenza, bookshelf or dramatic entry table, either with candles or simply displayed as sculptural objects.
