"Phytanthoza Iconographia":
Set of Four 18th-Century Weinmann Engravings of Grapes
Circa 1740
A superb suite of four original antique botanical engravings depicting various species of grapes (Vitis), originating from Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s monumental work, Phytanthoza Iconographia (published c. 1737–1745).
These plates are masterpieces of 18th-century botanical illustration, utilizing a groundbreaking "mixed method" technique. The engraver Bartholomäus Seuter (whose initial "S" appears in the lower right) combined etching with mezzotint printed in color, which was then meticulously finished with hand-coloring. This innovative process allowed for delicate lines and a subtle, grain-free shading that renders the translucency of the grape skins and the texture of the leaves with exceptional realism.
The Subjects: The set includes four distinct plates identifying specific varietals:
No. 1014: Vitis Corinthiaca (Corinthian/Currant Grape) & Vitis Vinifera
No. 1015: Vitis Vinifera, Vin blanc (White Wine Grape)
No. 1016: Vitis Vinifera fructu rubro (Red Wine Grape)
No. 1017: Vitis Selinoides (Parsley-leaved Grape)
Framing: The prints are presented in handsome, custom-made Sapele wood shadow box frames with rounded corners. Sapele is an African hardwood prized for its density and straight grain, providing a rich, warm surround that complements the antique paper tones.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The colors remain fresh and the impressions are strong. The paper is clean with minimal age toning.
Measurements:
Frame Height: 18 inches (45.7 cm)
Frame Width: 11 inches (27.9 cm)
Frame Depth: 1 3/4 inches (4.4 cm)
Historical Context:
Weinmann, a Regensburg apothecary, organized this massive undertaking to create a comprehensive iconography of all known cultivated plants. While the project was financed by Weinmann, the artistic execution relied heavily on the uncredited genius of Georg Dionysius Ehret (who provided 500 designs) and the technical prowess of engravers like Seuter. These plates became influential source material for artists across Europe, famously inspiring designs at the Meissen porcelain factory.
Literature:
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, Phytanthoza Iconographia (Regensburg, 1737–1745).
Dunthorne: Notes the particular interest of these plates due to their early use of color printing.
