In ancient China, terracotta statues were made to accompany and protect emperors and personalities in the afterlife. The horse was very important as it was the one that allowed the deceased to be brought into the afterlife. Moreover, it was during the Tang Dynasty that the strength of cavalry was discovered. The emperor was very fond of his horses and made them dance.
This pair of Unglazed Tang style horses is made of terracotta and most likely made in the 1800’s. In unbroken gift giving condition with beautiful details and subtle colors.
