Byōbu screens are exquisitely beautiful … Read more Vintage extremely large 1940’s MCM authentic hand painted watercolor artwork on 10 framed silk panels. Byōbu screens are exquisitely beautiful emblems of wealth and power dating all the way back to Six Dynasties China (220-589 AD). Motifs changed over time but these intricate pieces were often given as gifts. In the 16th century there was a growth in the application of metal foils, particularly gold. The scenes depicted on this particular piece are (from left to right): a crane in a landscape, a flying passerine bird, two flying birds above a garden, one humming bird in a lily pond, two ravens in a tree, a rooster in a landscape, a bird flying above a rose garden, 3 koi fish with cheery blossom trees, a brown bird taking off in flight, and another brown bird perched in a cherry blossom tree. Each panel is beautifully done and has the artists signature and title for the work. The artwork is set in a heavy solid wooden frame with a creamy beige fabric border. The corners and sides of the wooden frame have lovely metal hardware. The back is covered in dark blue canvas fabrication. It can be displayed standing or hung on a wall! And it's panels fold up nicely for easy storage and moving.
