Designed by Raija Uosikkinen (1923-2004) for Arabia of Finland, "Sotka" is one of the more popular and sought-after mid 20th Century patterns as it was only in production between 1968 to 1974. The streamlined ceramic forms were styled after the functional work of Ulla Procopé and used the standard tableware shapes engineered by Göran Bäck.
Like the "Emilia", "Valencia" and "Pomono" patterns it features the signature blue broad brush strokes of several of Arabia's collections embellishing the dinnerware. The "Sotka" (a Bluebill bird) pattern depicts an abstract feather decoration in a calligraphic-like brush stroke, and because each was hand painted by Arabia's team of in-house artisans the pieces are distinctly unique and there are discernible variations in the tone - from pale watercolor, to cobalt, to deep ink blue.
The set of twenty-six (25) pieces includes:
1 Oval serving platter (14.125" L x 10.325" W x 1.125" H)
4 Dinner plates (10.125" in diameter, 0.875" H)
4 Salad / Dessert plates (7.875" in diameter, 0.875" H)
4 Soup bowls with rims (8.125" in diameter, 1.325" H)
4 Bread & Butter plates (6.875" in diameter, 0.625" H)
4 Saucers (5.25" in diameter, 0.75" H)
4 Coffee / Tea cups (3.875" W from rim to handle, 2.875" in diameter, 2.875" H)

It should be known that on the bottom of each piece there are factory-made unglazed "specks" (an average of threee (3), see photos) that indicate that they were burnished and placed on elevated prongs to dry once they were each painted. Furthermore, no two pieces are identical and there are variations in the brush strokes (see photos) because they were each hand painted and not printed in a factory such as transferware. Twenty-two (22) of the twenty-five (25) pieces are intact and in overall good condition. The oval platter has visible crazing on the bottom surface (see photos) and is marked "1" indicating that it was from the original production line made in 1964. There are no cracks or fissures on the underside that would render it unusable. One of the dinner plates has a minor fleabite (see photos) on the underside that is not visible on the surface. And one of the bread plates has some crazing spots on the white glazed surface (see photos). All wear is commensurate with their age and past usage. less
