Elegant and unusual Italian dressing table / vanity in walnut and finely figured burl walnut, fitted with a tall central … Read more Elegant and unusual Italian dressing table / vanity in walnut and finely figured burl walnut, fitted with a tall central mirror, most likely produced in the Cantù area of Lombardy, circa 1930–1935, one of the principal centers of high-quality Italian cabinetmaking during the interwar period.
The piece is conceived as a balanced architectural composition, with two side storage cabinets connected by a continuous lower platform and centered by a tall vertical mirror. The gently curved cabinet fronts, shaped tops and molded profiles create a refined and fluid silhouette.
Particular attention was given to the choice and arrangement of the burl walnut veneer, used on the most visible surfaces and selected for the richness and movement of its natural grain. The warm tonal variations of the veneer contrast elegantly with the darker molded edges and structural elements.
The vanity stands on four carved cabriole-style feet, while the shaped upper crest of the mirror and the softly curved cabinet profiles reveal the persistence of eighteenth-century and Chippendale-inspired decorative vocabulary within Italian furniture of the early 1930s.
Stylistically, the piece represents an interesting transitional moment between Italian Barocchetto / Chippendale Revival furniture and the emerging Art Deco language. Its combination of historicist curves, refined veneers and progressively simplified volumes is particularly characteristic of high-level Italian decorative furniture produced between the late 1920s and mid-1930s.
The quality of the cabinetmaking, veneer work and overall construction is consistent with furniture made within the important Cantù cabinetmaking district, an area closely associated with leading Italian manufacturers and designers of the period.
The piece shows noteworthy affinities with furniture produced in the cultural and manufacturing environment surrounding La Permanente Mobili Cantù, and more broadly with the Milanese and Brianza furniture tradition connected with designers such as Paolo Buffa, Emilio Lancia, Gio Ponti and the Borsani family workshops.
At present, no maker's label or archival documentation has been identified that would allow a definitive attribution to a specific manufacturer or designer. For this reason, the association with Cantù manufacture and the circle of La Permanente Mobili Cantù should be regarded as a stylistic and comparative attribution.
The vanity also has an established Italian provenance. It came from a private family in Adria, Veneto, Italy, and has been part of the A&MYART Collection since 2003.
With its elegant proportions and strong decorative presence, the piece can be used today as a traditional dressing table or vanity, but it would also work beautifully as an entry console with mirror, bedroom statement piece, dressing-room cabinet or decorative focal point in a contemporary interior, where the richly figured walnut creates an effective contrast with modern materials and furnishings.
