Umberto calamida (florence, 1871 -1964) umberto calamida was a well-known otolaryngologist, primary doctor at the maggiore hospital in milan and first teacher of the discipline in the lombard capital. Calamida, as well as a talented surgeon and operator, was the author of important studies in the various fields of the specialty, from anatomy to physiology, to pathology, to the clinic. In 1927 he was appointed president of the lombard section for the collection of scientific material of the first national exhibition of the history of science, which took place in florence in 1928. Member of numerous scientific societies, he was president of the italian society of otolaryngology in 1929-30 and in 1930-31, he created the regional groups of otolaryngology, founded the periodical l'otorinolaringologia italiana with s. Citelli and p. Caliceti. Agostino gemelli, (milan, 1878 – 1959) agostino gemelli was an italian franciscan friar, physician and psychologist, who was also the founder and first rector of the catholic university of the sacred heart in milan. Gemelli's institute of psychology was the most prominent institution of its kind in italy. In 1959 he founded a teaching hospital for the medical school of the university, located in rome, the agostino gemelli university polyclinic, which is now named after him and is still today a national excellence.
