A matching set of six antique Japanese Imari porcelain plates from the late Meiji period, circa 1890–1910. Each 7.5-inch plate has a deeply scalloped 16-lobed rim and hand-painted decoration in cobalt blue, iron red, soft orange and touches of green on a white porcelain ground.
A central medallion shows a stylized floral arrangement in a vase, framed by alternating panels of flowering branches and geometric latticework, then finished with a bold iron-red border. Small variations in brushwork and enamel from plate to plate show the hand-finishing.
With their shaped rims and saturated color, the six plates are made for wall display: arrange them around a mirror, hang a symmetrical plate wall above a sideboard or console, or work them into a larger gallery wall of antique porcelain. They also sit well on plate stands, on open shelving or in a china cabinet.
Imari’s layered patterns and signature blue-and-red palette have been prized for centuries, and this set carries that tradition into English traditional, chinoiserie, grandmillennial and eclectic interiors.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I particularly like these plates as a group of six. Their scalloped edges and wonderful combination of cobalt blue and iron red make them especially attractive when displayed together. I think they would be fabulous arranged around an antique mirror in a dining room, just as we've shown in our room photograph. It's a lovely way to enjoy antique porcelain every day rather than keeping it tucked away in a cabinet.
