Thick curved fresnel glass lenses dominate the front face of this heavy-gauge copper and brass ship's navigation lantern. Engineered for duty at sea, the twin-tier vertical configuration provided two independent light chambers, ensuring continuous illumination high on the mast even if one light source failed. The arched copper body retains its applied brass nameplate boldly embossed 'masthead' across the top cowl, alongside an oval maker's plaque stamped 'meteorite' and an accompanying patent specification plate mounted to the central dividing band. The lantern is constructed from stout sheet copper with rolled rims and brass reinforcement, designed to withstand rigorous maritime conditions. A vertical brass guard bar protects the forward arc of both glass lenses. Heavy cast-brass mounting brackets are riveted to the base, providing sturdy footing and fixing points. At the rear, two hinged circular inspection covers with heavy dog clamps provide access to the upper and lower lighting compartments, retaining their original marine access arrangement. Originally built to burn oil burners, the lantern dates to the early 20th century and has since been adapted for domestic electrical use. Both internal compartments now house standard screw bulb holders with wiring routed through rear access apertures. The electrical components will require formal testing and rewiring by a qualified electrician prior to indoor installation. Substantial in scale and build, the lantern measures approximately 60 cm in height, 34 cm in width, and 30 cm in depth. The copper surfaces exhibit an authentic aged patina with light tarnishing, scattered surface indentations, and handling marks commensurate with working sea service. Both heavy glass lenses remain firmly seated, showing visible chipping and flaking along their lower ribbed edges alongside a localized dent to the copper base rim.
