An exceptionally rare, museum-quality find for the connoisseur of fine English ceramics: a 19th-century Victorian brown (cane/chocolate) and white Jasperware cheese dome and matching underplate. Unlike the more commonly seen pale blues and sage greens, this rich, earthy dark brown dip colorway is exceptionally scarce and highly sought after for sophisticated tablescapes, traditional country house styling, and historic home curation.
The cylindrical bell features three small integrated ventilation holes at the crown to properly regulate humidity for stored cheeses, capped beautifully by a sculptural acorn-style handle finial. The exterior is richly decorated with finely modeled, crisp white hand-applied sprigged neoclassical relief work depicting a grand pastoral hunting scene complete with figures, horses, and hounds. Repeated bands of a delicate white oak leaf and acorn foliate border flank the primary scene and encircle the wide matching underplate rim.
This handsome set makes a powerful structural statement centerpiece for a dining buffet, a kitchen island, or a glass-front display cabinet.
PROVENANCE & MARKINGS:
The underside of the underplate features a crisp, authentic 19th-century impressed 8-pointed star / rosette workman's tally mark, characteristic of premium Staffordshire potteries of the Victorian era. Because it entirely lacks an explicit factory name stamp, this museum-grade set is expertly cataloged as an attribution to iconic makers Wedgwood or James Dudson, beautifully validated by its masterful relief casting, specialized chocolate-brown dip, and traditional multi-piece configuration.
Dimensions:
• Underplate Diameter: 12 inches
• Total Height (Including Dome & Finial): Approx. 10.5 inches
