A pair of late 18th-century French Louis XVI carved walnut armchairs, sourced in the Loire Valley, France. The chairs reflect the restrained symmetry and classical detailing characteristic of the Louis XVI period. The walnut frames feature tall upholstered backs with gracefully shaped crest rails, carved foliate motifs at the upper corners, and finely fluted, tapered legs. Carved floral motifs at the front seat corners, molded seat rails, and gently curved arm supports terminating in scroll-shaped handrests further define their classical design. Traditional construction details and visible pegged joinery contribute to the character and craftsmanship of the pieces. The armchairs are upholstered in celadon green velvet, finished with aged brass nailhead trim following the contours of the backs, padded arms, and seats. The muted green upholstery complements the warm tones and natural patina of the walnut. The chairs were structurally revised to ensure stability, while the walnut frames were cleaned, polished, and waxed to preserve their original character, grain, and age-related wear. Suitable as a pair of occasional chairs in a living room, library, or bedroom, they can also be combined with their matching settee to create a coordinated Louis XVI seating arrangement. The walnut frames retain a warm, naturally aged patina with old repairs and surface wear consistent with their age. The velvet upholstery shows gentle fading, tonal variation, and signs of use.
