A spectacular piece full of whimsy and brilliant color! This unusual vintage majolica centerpiece bowl pairs a rich turquoise lily pad with two green frogs, each crouched beneath the bowl as though carrying the enormous leaf on its back.
The frogs are especially fabulous, with beautifully modeled rounded bodies, substantial folded legs, long individually articulated toes and wonderfully expressive raised eyes. The subtle variations in their mottled green glaze add to their character.
Above them, the deep lily-pad bowl has a lovely irregular, undulating rim and molded radiating veins. Its luminous turquoise glaze ranges from blue-green to deeper teal, with darker pooling and touches of green along the edges. The frogs rest on an ivory crackle-glazed oval base, giving the entire piece the timeworn character associated with vintage majolica.
The underside bears a small incised "75" as well as an old, handwritten paper inventory label. The surviving label is consistent in appearance and construction with an older gummed paper inventory label, rather than a modern printed product label; its manufacturer and date have not been established. No maker's mark was found, and the exact maker and country of origin remain unknown.
Sculptural from every angle, this is a fantastic centerpiece on its own—and an irresistible piece for anyone with a fondness for frogs, garden-inspired ceramics or wonderfully eccentric vintage objects.
Full disclosure: Ms. H. owns its twin!
