Japanese Ōshima-tsumugi silk fabric features a distinct bamboo leaf pattern and traditional tate yoko ikat weave.
Bolt of Ōshima-tsumugi (大島紬), a highly revered, luxury Japanese silk textile originating from the Amami Islands.
It is a 100% plain-weave silk pongee, widely celebrated as the "queen of kimono" due to its exceptional lightness, wrinkle resistance, and durability.
The deep charcoal-black blue background is traditionally achieved through a meticulous, multi-stage mud-dyeing process (dorozome) utilizing iron-rich mud and juice from the teichigi (Hawthorn wood) tree.
The striking white bamboo leaf motif is created using the complex Kasuri (ikat) technique. Rather than printing or painting on the cloth, the individual warp and weft threads are bound tightly (shime-kako) prior to dyeing so that they remain white. When woven together on handlooms, they perfectly align to construct the pre-calculated pattern.
The unique weaving process (shimebata) used to create these patterns
