Three original antique chromolithographs of British birds by Henrik Grönvold. Each is signed “H. Grönvold” in the plate.
The prints were published circa 1907-1908 by Brumby & Clarke in A.G. Butler’s Birds of Great Britain and Ireland: Order Passeres. “Order Passeres” is the older name for the perching birds, or songbirds.
Subjects are Marsh Tit (Plate 41), Rock Pipit (Plate 56) and Blackbird (Plate 6). Each shows a pair of birds in its natural habitat, in soft layered color and fine feather detail only achieved by the chromolithography process. Each color has its own hand-drawn and carved stone in several successive passes.
Grönvold was among the last natural history illustrators to publish lithographs, so these plates come from the final era of this technique.
Over 115 years old, the prints are in excellent antique condition. I re-framed them to archival standards:
Embossed linen mat
Glazing is UV-protective, non-glare plexiglass
Larson-Juhl solid wood moulding, made in Italy
Silvered finish with a gold wash, a blend we call “gilver”
Archival quality materials throughout
