This antique African carved wood bowl was cut by hand from a single block, and the tool marks, nicks and worn rim are still plain to see. Bowls like this were everyday vessels for milk, grain and shared meals, and decades of food oils and smoke have left the dark patina.

At 12 inches wide and 6 inches tall, it fits on an entry console as a catchall for keys and mail, on a coffee table as a sculptural object or on a shelf beside books. The incised bands and honest wear give it a handmade presence that suits natural, collected interiors.
