Such pieces needed to be sturdy enough to withstand the banging and bumping they would get on a coach or train ride. This trunk is built for the purpose. The top is a snug fit, its trim on the front and sides overlapping a corresponding tongue around the top edge of the box, such that it stays tightly closed and the lock cannot be manipulated from the outside. (The lock on this piece may function but we have no key) The case has exposed hand-cut dovetails on all four corners. The top lifts on iron hinges, to reveal a deep storage well inside with a lidded candle box or till on the right. There are iron carrying handles on the sides. We have done nothing to “tidy up” this piece. Rather, we have elected to leave it in “as found” condition, showing all the dings and scrapes accumulated over decades of purposeful use. Presented in a well-worn mustard wash. See less
