This exquisite writing table from Baker Furniture’s Historic Charleston Reproductions Collection is a meticulously detailed piece of historical craftsmanship. The original piece belongs to the Chippendale style—specifically Chinese Chippendale taste—which was at the height of fashion during the late Georgian era between 1760 and 1780.
STYLE: While the aesthetic heavily features English design elements, the original antique was crafted by master cabinetmakers in the United States, specifically in Charleston, South Carolina during the pre-Revolutionary colonial golden age of Charleston's wealthy merchant class. The blind geometric lattice fretwork on the drawer fronts, the carved gadroon molding running along the edge of the mahogany top, the decorative bracket accents framing the straight legs and the dramatic solid brass lion-mask ring pulls are all hallmarks of the 18th-century English-American Chippendale style.
MATERIALS: The exterior structure is made of premium solid mahogany and matched mahogany veneers. True to period construction techniques, the secondary wood used for the drawer liners is high-grade oak (with some white pine or ash block construction for structural support elements).
HISTORIC CHARLESTON REPRODUCTIONS: This program was launched by the Historic Charleston Foundation in 1976 to partner with top-tier manufacturers like Baker Furniture. The collection was designed to replicate the exceptional museum-quality 18th- and 19th-century antiques preserved inside the city's legendary historic residences such as the Nathaniel Russell House and the Heyward-Washington House. By offering precise, licensed adaptations of these guarded family heirlooms, the collection made regional aristocratic furniture accessible to the broader high-end commercial market.
A portion of all sales revenue generated from the Baker Furniture partnership went directly back into the Historic Charleston Foundation's revolving fund for historic preservation and local restoration projects. These royalties financed the physical upkeep of landmark homes, architectural conservation efforts, and neighborhood revitalization following natural disasters such as repairing structural damage after Hurricane Hugo.
USE TODAY: Thanks to its finished back and shallow footprint of 22" depth, this table functions perfectly as a freestanding executive writing desk, an elegant sofa table, a foyer console, or an upscale dining room server. Its clean, linear profile allows it to blend seamlessly into traditional spaces or act as a warm historic counterpoint in transitional and modern eclectic rooms.
