A magnificent late 18th-century Dutch tall case clock signed by P.R. Thymen of Amsterdam, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship, intricate inlay, and elaborate decorative details. The richly figured burl walnut case is adorned with bronze mounts and floral inlay, creating an elegant presentation of traditional Dutch furniture artistry.
The finely decorated hood features delicate fretwork and a hand-carved Atlas supporting the earth, accompanied by trumpeting angels. The impressive brass dial is equally captivating, with a hand-etched country scene depicting a gentleman playing a flute for a lady. Between the figures is an aperture displaying the operational moon dial.
Additional dial features include four cast-brass spandrels, a silvered chapter ring, a seconds dial, and separate windows indicating the day of the month and day of the week. The chapter ring bears the clockmaker's signature and place of residence, P.R. Thymen, Amsterdam.
The weight-driven movement runs for eight days per winding. The clock strikes the hour on a bell at the hour and announces the coming hour on a higher-pitched bell at the half hour, adding distinctive mechanical and auditory character.
Standing an impressive 116 inches tall, this exceptional antique makes a commanding focal point in a grand entryway, formal living room, or distinguished clock collection. A remarkable example of historic Dutch horology and decorative craftsmanship.
