This vintage Sarreguemines majolica oyster plate presents a softly scalloped, round silhouette, with six deep, shell-shaped wells arranged in a radiating, flower-like pattern around a small central cup. Crafted from glazed earthenware in the French majolica tradition, each well is molded with fine, fan-like ribs that mimic the grooves of a scallop shell. The glaze graduates from creamy ivory at the center of each shell to warm coral and apricot at the outer edges, giving the wells a luminous, sunset-like blush. Between them, sprays of feathery, fern-like leaves in teal, turquoise, and deep green rise in relief against a ground of soft celadon and chartreuse. The central well is ringed in a pale blue, hexagonal collar, with a radiating pinwheel of coral and green ribs at its heart. The glaze is glossy and fluid, pooling slightly in the recesses and catching the light along the ridges, with fine crazing adding a mellowed, time-softened depth. Fresh, tactile, and distinctly maritime, the plate recalls the exuberant table ceramics of the Victorian seaside.
Display this plate on a dining table, sideboard, or open shelf, hang it as a wall accent, or use it to serve oysters, canapés, or small bites. It complements French Provincial, Coastal, Victorian, Cottage, and Grandmillennial interiors. To care for it, hand wash gently with mild soap and warm water, avoid soaking, dishwashers, and sudden temperature changes, and dry thoroughly to protect the glaze; due to the crazing, it is best suited to display or light serving use. The plate measures 9.25 inches (235 mm) wide, 9.25 inches (235 mm) deep, and 1 inch (25 mm) high. Condition is very good, with vibrant original glaze, minor age-appropriate crazing, slight wear on the base, and no visible chips or cracks. Add this charming antique to your collection today.
