The shallow vessel is sculpted as a pomegranate surrounded by naturalistically carved foliage, giving the piece an organic and distinctly sculptural appearance. The irregular contours of the stone have been incorporated into the composition rather than forced into a conventional geometric vessel.

Pomegranates have a long tradition as auspicious imagery in Chinese decorative arts, where the fruit and its abundance of seeds came to symbolize fertility, abundance, prosperity, and numerous descendants.

The soapstone displays layered green and gray-green coloration with lighter undertones and natural variation throughout. Its softly polished, waxy surface has acquired considerable wear over time, giving the piece an appealing aged character.

Numerous scratches and abrasions are visible across the surface, with some deeper scratches exposing the naturally lighter, whitish stone beneath the darker green exterior. The surface has not been refinished, preserving the visible evidence of age and use.

Brush washers formed part of the traditional Chinese scholar’s table and held water used for rinsing brushes during calligraphy and painting. Their functional purpose was frequently combined with naturalistic carving, transforming an everyday scholar’s implement into a small work of sculpture.

The piece is stylistically attributed to the transition between the Late Qing Dynasty and Chinese Republic Period, approximately 1890–1930. The dating is based upon the form, carving, material, surface characteristics, and comparison with period examples rather than documented provenance.
