During the late 19th century, wealthy families frequently commissioned master furniture makers to create exact, scaled-down replicas of their parlor and bedroom furniture specifically for their children. These child-sized slipper chairs were placed in nurseries or the mother's bedroom so a young daughter could practice sitting upright and mimicking proper adult decorum.
This 1880s mahogany child's slipper chair was professionally restored decades ago, and it has been virtually unused since. It was reupholstered with teal moiré fabric and decorative gimp trim, and the wood was stained and varnished, leaving this piece looking excellent for its 140 plus years. The entire chair is solid with no wobbling or squeaking. There is some slight wear to be found around the edges from it being in and out of storage a couple times, but this is very minor and almost invisible. Top to bottom details: The seat back's fabric is in new condition on both the front and back, and both stiles, hip braces, and the spindles are in excellent condition with no looseness or other issues found. The seat is also very nice, save for slightly lighter spots toward the center and left that may be removable (or easily overlooked). It is very firm, as opposed to the seat back that is "normally" cushioned. The decorative side seat rails are fine, save for a slightly discolored spot on the right side 1/4 back from the front and a tiny bit of green paint above it. The apron at the front, under the seat has been replaced. It matches so well that it was not noticed until the new screws underneath were discovered. The underside of the seat is in very good condition, and all is secure in that area. All four legs are good. There are no structural issues, and they look good on the whole. The wooden caster wheels are cosmetically fine and swivel and spin as they should. Please see the pictures for further details.
